Line Striper

PLEASE NOTE: To become a line striper apprentice you must complete the following:

PROGRAM OBJECTIVE

  • Getting Information – Apprentices will be observing, receiving, and obtaining information from working professionals, material manufacturers, and online programs.
  • Handling and Operating both Truck Mounted and Walk Behind Equipment –  Apprentices will provide equipment maintenance and application procedures for the various materials utilized within the industry.
  • Performing General Physical Activities – Apprentices will perform physical activities using arms and legs and should be in good physical condition. Climbing on and off equipment, in and out of trucks, carrying materials, and pushing small equipment are all required.
  • Establishing and Maintaining Interpersonal Relationships – Apprentices will work hand in hand with a crew ranging from 2 to 10 coworkers. The ability to work with others to accomplish a common goal is required.

Duties of a Line Striper

  • Working on projects such as highways, parking lots, and airports
  • Plan reading and layout of proposed marking on the pavement prior to application.
  • In some cases, performing surface preparation prior to application of material.
  • Setting up, loading, and operating installation equipment & trucks
  • In some cases, performing post-installation quality control testing.

Working Conditions

  • A rewarding career in a hands-on role that requires focus, physical stamina, and a commitment to quality workmanship 
  • While most equipment is automated there is physical activity such as climbing, pulling, pushing, and lifting (Ex. 50 lb. bags of thermoplastic or beads and 65 lb. paint buckets)
  • Work is completed outside, often at night and often on active highways, and as such safety and self-awareness are of the utmost importance.
  • Occupational hazards include slip and fall as well as irritation form material fumes and burns from hot material and/or equipment.
  • Due to seasonal weather, line stripers lose some work time each year.

Interest and Temperament 

The ideal candidate for a line striper should be adaptable to working in seasonal weather conditions and be resilient to various weather conditions. They should have a strong work ethic, be able to manage their time effectively and prioritize safety measures while working outdoors for extended periods. Additionally, they should possess good communication skills and be able to work well independently or as part of a team.

Terms of Apprenticeship

2-year apprenticeship program with 4,000 total hours.

Course Offerings

During your Apprenticeship at the FTI-MAR, course offerings are arranged in cohorts. A cohort by definition is a group of people who share a common characteristic or experience within a defined period; in this case the cohorts were designed so that you are enrolled in your Apprentice Trade Specific Program with the same group of people for year one through year two.

The FTI-MAR automatically enrolls you in the appropriate courses each year of your apprenticeship.  Listed below is breakdown of course offerings per apprenticeship year (trade specific):
